Despite the medical community’s stated concern about obesity and its effects on human health, some people still scoff about the “nuts and berries” of dieting. The fact of the matter, however, is that certain fruits are extremely beneficial to your immune system. The potential of anti-oxidants, which eliminate free radicals in the bloodstream, has long been realized in maintaining healthy cell structures. This means that those who include berries in their normal diet will face less risk of cancer, heart disease and other maladies.

Super Foods

Considered “super foods”, dark berries (such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries) have even been shown to slow the effects of aging. But who worries about aging when the one consuming the berries happens to be a baby? Answer: Said baby’s parents. Assuming there is no genetic predisposition for food allergies, berries are generally very good for a baby’s young system. The real trick is how best to prepare them for feeding – and not just pureed into traditional baby-food.

Approach With (Mild) Caution

When they get old enough to swallow solids, it’s still a good idea to cut fruit into small pieces, even blueberries, which are slippery and can be easily swallowed before sufficient chewing has taken place. Some people even prefer to peel blueberries, which cuts down on the mess. With raspberries, the size of an infant’s digestive system isn’t sufficient to fully digest the seeds, but finding them in the baby’s diaper shouldn’t be cause for alarm.

As with all foods, even berries should be approached with some degree of caution, especially commercially-grown strawberries (which not only have seeds but can also contain higher-than-desirable levels of pesticides). It may be wise to purchase organically grown strawberries, which are now more widely available – and more affordable priced – than ever before.

Making sure your baby has the right posture while eating will help aid digestion. Buy a good highchair, such as childcare cube highchair is important.
